What Is a Satoshi?
A satoshi is the smallest unit of Bitcoin, named after Bitcoin's pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto. One Bitcoin is divisible into 100,000,000 satoshis, which means that even if you can't afford a whole Bitcoin, you can still accumulate meaningful amounts of the world's largest cryptocurrency one satoshi at a time. At Bitcoin's current price, even a single dollar buys you thousands of satoshis.
Why Compare Satoshis to Everyday Items?
Large numbers are hard for humans to intuitively grasp. Telling someone they own 2,100,000 satoshis is technically accurate but emotionally inert.
